Bringing The Night Sky To You!

Dave, Scope and Moon

Dave Reneke has almost 50 years of astronomical experience behind him. He knows telescopes and he knows the night sky.

You can “rent” Astro Dave Reneke for an hour or more to get a customized tour of the night sky or instruction on how to use your telescope (or both). Dave will customize the stargazing session to meet your needs. Do you wish to learn the constellations? To know about movements in the sky? To better understand meteors and meteor showers? Or just to learn about the wonders of the beautiful dark night sky overhead?

Dave will provide individual or small group instruction under the night sky, tailored for you and your guests. Dave is familiar with most telescopes and can assist you in learning how to operate yours. If you have a telescope that is going unused or under-used, Dave can help you learn how to operate it safely and properly with hints on how to point it and what to look at. He can troubleshoot defective telescopes and recommend additional eyepieces and accessories to make your telescope operate more efficiently. Adding a telescope for any of Dave’s sessions is included in our pricing.

Group Star Parties with a Telescope

This is a perfect activity to cap a birthday party or other special event, and it will make for a very memorable evening. Dave loves to talk about the sky and to interpret its wonders. He’s done this for over 40 years, both as a hobby and professionally, and very few people do it better.

Dave points out constellations and bright stars, whichever planets are visible, and the Milky Way with his green laser pointer, and provides endless anecdotes and insights relat ing to the history of the constellations, the birth, life, and death of stars, distances in space, our place within the Milky Way Galaxy, how the sky changes with time, and much more.

Astro DavePeople are amazed at how many interesting things there are to know about the sky overhead, and Dave puts on an entertaining show that many people claim is the highlight of the week. John travels with a superb refracting telescope — the most excellent telescope in its size range and informs people on what sort of telescope to buy and where to get it from to avoid being ripped off.

During the star party, Dave points the telescope toward a variety of celestial objects including the moon and planets (whichever are visible), star clusters, gaseous nebulae, and distant galaxies. Dave makes sure everyone, including the kids, get a leisurely look.

There is no size limit for your group although Dave speaks to groups as small as a handful and as large as 160 in most cases. Perhaps surprisingly, most people remain a full two hours!

Although we endeavour to show you the stars for a horizon-widening experience, star-gazing remains a weather dependent activity and the phase of the Moon should also be taken into account when planning a tour over the night sky. We can help here… just email for advice.

We offer sky discovery programs which contain both educational explanations about the sky and impressive observations of various celestial objects. Or sessions just for fun and just for the heck of it! Each tour of course of the visible sky that night depends on the presence of the moon and planets, the season of the year.

Each tour starts with a short explanation of the basic geographic facts (why the sky in the North is different from the sky in the South, rotation of the Earth with the seasons), the main constellations, and their historical/poetic significations. We follow with observations through high quality large telescopes which will show you a few of the breathtaking objects visible in the Milky Way.

While we all know how these celestial objects look like, there is nothing like the experience of visual observing. Everybody has seen images of Saturn, but the first time you really see the planet with your own eyes, becomes a moment to remember.

Our telescopes are correctly aligned to always provide the best possible view, in order to let you discover some of the incredible views the sky has to offer. These telescopes are correctly maintained, and we use only high quality eyepieces to provide clear, sharp wide angle views.

We offer general star tours each night and can also offer specialized star tours and other offers for amateur astronomy groups. For groups, we can reserve the tour for less or more people. For the groups who are more interested in astronomy, we can provide specialized tours.

The tour’s duration lasts one and a half hours long. It sometimes goes a bit longer if the interest is there … and we don’t mind that.

Costs: We usually charge $4 per paying person with a minimum of 50 people … larger groups can be done at a more negotiable cost. For ALL shows please call first (0400 636 363) to discuss the matter OR Email me davereneke@gmail.com and I’m sure we’ll work something out to suit you and your budget.

Some recommendations:

Good morning Dave. My name is Paul Barry and you may recall I introduced myself after your presentation last Tuesday at the Probus South meeting at the Port Macquarie Golf Club. Firstly, let me reiterate what a wonderful presentation you gave on the Planets, Stars and Constellations of our night skies. It certainly garnered a lot of interest at question time from the members, a sure sign that it was a most enjoyable and informative talk. Well done.

You may also recall that I mentioned that I was the Guest Speaker Liaison officer for another club, Port Macquarie Combined Probus and cheekily asked if you might consider being our Guest Speaker later this year. I hope you can consider our invitation. Looking forward to hearing from you and I note that you have presented to our club back in 2009! Many new members since then though but still quite a few that recall your talk and highly recommend you.
