Astronomy and Telescope Lessons

Hi, I’m your instructor, David Reneke.  I’m one of Australia’s most well known and respected amateur astronomers and lecturers with over 40 years experience in astronomy with links to some of the world’s leading astronomical institutions.

I’m the Editor for Australia’s Astro-Space News Magazine, past news editor of Sky & Space Magazine now affiliated as a writer and publicist for the prestigious Australasian Science magazine.

I’ve taught astronomy at college level, I’m an invited speaker at astronomy conventions throughout Australia, a feature writer for major Australian newspapers, and a science correspondent for ABC and commercial radio stations.

In these weekly radio interviews I regularly appear on over 13 stations across Australia with all the latest news and on general astronomy and space discovery issues. Our  audience numbers around 3 million listeners weekly! My intense media schedule has included appearances on regional, national and international TV. I’ve been featured on Regional TV stations in NSW, Good Morning America, American MSNBC news, the BBC, Spanish television and Sky News here in Australia. I am also the prime media correspondent for Australasian Science Magazine.

I’m a very experienced astronomy and space presenter who has entertained and educated many tens of thousands of people with my engaging shows in venues all around Australia. I have developed a style of presenting astronomy and space discovery to the public that is not only interesting but incredibly unique as well. I also produce a range of educational DVDs and space related products on all matters associated with astronomy and space exploration for beginners.

Astronomy Lessons

Suitable for those with little or no knowledge of astronomy, this  session is covered in simple, easy to understand terms. No, you won’t be bored.   I will provide individual or small family/friends group instruction under the night sky using a laser beam pointer, tailored for you, using very basic terminology. You’ll pick it up straight away.

This highly engaging introduction to astronomy provides a memorable understanding of the planets, stars and constellations of our night sky. Using some computer graphics you’ll learn how the universe was created, discover the wonder and beauty of stars, star clusters, galaxies, and black holes – and hear about the latest discoveries in space and astronomy–you’ll even get to hold a real 4.5 billion year old meteorite!

 All About Telescopes

Do you have a telescope but don’t really know how to use it properly? Have you been given a telescope as a present and need some friendly advice about how to use it? Well this session is for you!

I am familiar with most telescopes and will explain the various types, how to aim and focus them and can assist in learning how to operate yours. If you have a telescope that is going unused or under-used, bring it along.

Note: I do not instruct on Go-To to scopes or anything that requires tracking, they are outside the scope of this basic lesson structure. I can help you learn how to operate your basic telescope properly and show you what to point it to tonight.

I can troubleshoot defective telescopes and recommend additional eyepieces and accessories to make your telescope operate more efficiently. Hey, it doesn’t matter if you don’t own a telescope. You’ll be using ours. If you are thinking of purchasing a telescope I can advise you on what sort to buy and where to get it from to avoid being ripped off.
