Astronaut Revealed Some Weird Things About Life In Space

Living in space is both challenging and rewarding.

Living in space is both challenging and rewarding.

Scott Kelly has been living aboard the International Space Station for more than 300 days, so we can safely assume he is used to life in space. He will spend the better part of 365 days up there.

Its an achievement that will make him the first American to spend an entire year in space in one voyage. He’s on his fourth spaceflight, during which he has become the record holder for the most number of days spent in space. His first expedition was back in 1999 when he piloted Discovery on a mission to install new instruments on the Hubble Space Telescope.

A space veteran, Kelly recently took part in a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) and dished out some truths about the weird, rewarding and at times disgusting things that come with calling a spaceship home.

Users asked Kelly questions on the online forum about topics ranging from bodily functions, to eating, to what his best view has been. Some of his answers will intrigue you, baffle you, and one or two may even cause you to be sick.

One user asked Kelly “What’s the creepiest thing you’ve encountered while on the job?” “Generally it has to do with the toilet. Recently I had to clean up a gallon-sized ball of urine mixed with acid,” Kelly wrote.

“The acid is added to the urine so the urine doesn’t damage the machinery that moves it through the system. It keeps it from clogging up the system.” Of course, it’s so obvious. How could we not have known astronauts need to mix their urine with acid?

Another unsettling truth about life away from Earth was what happens to your feet. “The calluses on your feet in space will eventually fall off. So, the bottoms of your feet become very soft like newborn baby feet,” wrote Kelly.   Adapted: News.Com
