We’ve formed a new astronomy and space group on the mid north coast NSW (Wauchope) under the auspices of world renowned local astronomer (Astro) Dave Reneke. This is open to all ages groups.

Do you own a telescope and don’t know what to do with it, or have you always had a fascination for the night sky but wanted to know more?  A new astronomy group has now formed on the Mid-North Coast under the auspices of world renowned local astronomer (Astro) Dave Reneke.

Dave is a feature space writer for major Australian publications including Australasian Science magazine and a science correspondent for ABC and commercial radio.

‘Astro’ Dave Reneke

He’s also a sought after astronomy educator and lecturer.  “Over the years many Hastings residents have approached me about starting an astronomy group and I think it’s a good idea,” Dave said. “It’s strictly for Mid-north Coast residents and free for anyone who wants to join.”

Appearing live on 13 radio stations weekly across Australia, Dave gets lots of questions about space and astronomy, many relating to buying and using a telescope. A big part of the group will be just that,” Dave said. “I’ll be able to teach members not only how to select the right scope for them but show them how to get the best use from it. They’ll learn a lot about astronomy from me as well.” Membership to the group is free and informal with no committees or official procedures to slow things down,” Dave added.

Why Not Join Mid North Coast Astronomy

Its FREE and you’re invited to join. This group is strictly for residents of the Hastings and surrounding districts, or anyone outside who can travel and take an active part in running it. By the way, you don’t need a telescope to join, the group will loan you one. Remember, Its FREE and you can stay as long as you want.

This was a warm-up for June 21 WWSF and we attracted over 300 members of the public keen to view the Sun… for the first time… it was also ‘First Blood’ for one of our DAYSTAR SolaREDI 66 scopes (Donated by Daystar Filters USA https://www.daystarfilters.com/)

We had all scopes with a line-up. I was busy with the Daystar and everyone else was busy with solar glasses – I got away long enough to grab some pics and video of founding member Dave Cooper at our other scopes. We received a dozen new membership enquiries on the day.

MID NORTH COAST ASTRONOMY – First Field Night 2016

What a large turnout for our first real night meeting in 2016. We had over a dozen people on the field, most with scopes, to spend a few hours under absolutely pristine skies! No Moon and no pollution to prevent the BIG interest last night in astro-photography.

Good to see new member and now good friend John Gleave with his new 909 EQ2 90mm Saxon refractor. Also good to see young Ryan barker come along and set up his 6″ Dob. We spent some time together getting him used to the scope and finding his way around the night sky.

We have an open door policy, no destructive committees or bosses, and a lot of effort will go in to train you and make you welcome. Please only come along if you are SERIOUS about sticking around.

Friday night 19th August, Sancrox Reserve at Wauchope In conjunction with National SCIENCE WEEK

Future Moves Sky Stories Project is an initiative of Charles Sturt University working with local public schools. In the Hastings Valley, Hastings Secondary College (HSC) ,Port Macquarie and Westport Campuses as well as Wauchope High School are involved.

MID NORTH COAST ASTRONOMY was there. What a MASSIVE night of public astronomy. Over 450 people turned up including many families with kids. We were flat out from 5pm till a late 9pm finish doing as much as we could with the helpers who took the time and cared enough to come along and assist.

We had big telescopes set up, two courtesy of group member and well known Aussie amateur astronomer Dustin Bradford from Stroud Road with his12″ Dob and 14″ Meade. My personal thanks got to Dustin for the effort put in assisting me getting my gear to the field and set up.

The line-up was 40 persons long for over an hour at Dustin’s scopes. Dustin got magic views of Mars and Saturn. Keegan turned up to lend a hand, Jack Pedley was busy all night showing the Moon and planets to hundreds of people. Group member John Gleave had his large refractor set up on the field helping out and I was flat out doing my Powerpoint lecture followed by several 15 minute separate laser guided night sky tours.

A special ‘talking telescope’ was operating the kids enjoyed and I had my large screen set up on the grass with projector running my PowerPoint astronomy show ‘Secrets of the Universe’ to an appreciative audience of around 300 people. Sincere thanks to Dave Tynan – our roadie and technician on the night. Dave spent a lot of time and energy getting my screen, sound gear setup.
